Meridee Stein, Producer/Director

For over 20 years, Meridee Stein has produced and directed musical theatre, as Founding Artistic Director of the First All Children's Theatre Company, and then as president of Plain Language Productions, Inc. For most of her career, Ms. Stein has collaborated on new works for family audiences with such theatre luminaries as Stephen Schwartz, Sheldon Harnick, Charles Strouse, Richard Peaslee, and Elizabeth Swados, as well as Broadway designers Oliver Smith, John Lee Beatty and Marjorie Bradley Kellogg.

 

Outstanding accomplishments include the commissioning, producing and directing of all the productions of Stephen Schwartz's Captain Louie, based on a picture book by the Caldecott Award-winning children's author, Ezra Jack Keats. Captain Louie was first produced as The Trip at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theatre as part of the Imagination Celebration, and later at The New York Music Theatre Festival, ASCAP, the York Theatre Company, Off-Broadway at The Little Shubert Theatre and on national tour in 2006-7. Captain Louie took its place in the Music Theatre International catalog in the fall of 2008.

 

Ms. Stein also commissioned, produced and directed the family opera, Nightingale, by Charles Strouse, with sets by the legendary Oliver Smith. Nightingale received a world premiere opening at Wolf Trap, had a run in New York, and toured in Alaska.

 

Many of Ms. Stein's productions have appeared nationally at such venues as the New York Shakespeare Public Theatre, The O'Neill Theatre Center, The Annenberg Center, The Smithsonian, The Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Lincoln Center. Her international credits include productions in Canada, China, and Japan. Ms Stein also directed the Minnesota Opera Company production of Once Upon a Mattress, which toured for the United States Information Agency in India, Sri Lanka, and the Middle East.

 

For television Ms. Stein directed versions of two of her productions, one for ABC television and the other for CBS. She was talent coordinator and segments producer for Georgia Public Broadcasting on two nationally seen children's series.

 

Ms. Stein is a member of The Dramatists Guild of America and The Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. She is a 2004 graduate of The Commercial Theatre Institute.
